The main part of the research within the project will be done by 11 PhD participants in different projects. Some projects will focus primarily on technological development and design and on issues of capacities and scales, while other projects are emphasizing the governance and economic aspects of sanitation infrastructures. Four different levels are distinguished – households / community, city level / ecosystem (Lake Victoria), national and international. Knowledge from the different PhD-projects will be systematically gathered and creates the knowledge data base, which is one of the project's deliverables.

Within the PROVIDE program research on specific topics will be carried out by senior staff members and MSc students.
